IFMSA General Assemblies
IFMSA General Assemblies belong to the biggest youth-led events worldwide, bringing together between 800 and 1500 medical students from more than 100 countries. They are held twice a year during the first week of March (March Meeting) and August (August Meeting), lasting seven days (including arrival and departure day). The executive board is elected at the March Meeting, while the rest of the Team of Officials and the members of the Supervising Council are elected at August Meeting.
During the mornings, delegates take part in Standing Committee sessions of a specific field with opportunities for self-skills development, sessions on specific subtopics of the field and inspiring presentations of activities and projects. The important decision making process takes place during the plenary sessions in the afternoon. These decisions include electing the Team of Officials, making changes to the IFMSA constitution and bylaws and other regulations as well as voting on Policy Papers, membership status changes and reports. After all the work is done, delegates get to enjoy a social program at night, including but not limited to the traditional formal opening and closing ceremonies, the national food and drinks party (NFDP) and the infamous cultural night.
GAs are usually preceded by a pre-Regional Meeting, which are 3 days of capacity building workshops that go along with the specific needs and priorities of the regions.
The purpose of GAs is to inspire the next generation of future physicians to become leaders and advocates through the exchange of ideas, networking and learning from the various programming sessions.
AMSI members may apply to be a part of these delegations, with selection criteria released by the Vice-President for External Affairs ahead of registration deadlines.
