Our Vision
To empower medical students in Ireland with access to transformative academic, professional, and global opportunities—fostering a generation of clinically proficient, socially responsible, and globally engaged medical professionals committed to advancing health equity and systemic change.
Our Mission
The Association of Medical Students of Ireland (AMSI) is committed to developing the next generation of healthcare leaders through structured capacity-building, international research and clinical exchanges, medical education workshops, and policy-driven advocacy. We strengthen the competencies of medical students across Ireland by providing subsidised access to high-impact training, facilitating global mobility for clinical and research engagement, and ensuring Irish medical students are represented in global health dialogues as part of the broader IFMSA network.
Our Aims
1. Capacity Building for Clinical and Public Leadership
Design and deliver structured training programmes to cultivate soft skills, leadership acumen, health communication, evidence-based advocacy, and interprofessional collaboration.
Foster competencies in public speaking, conflict resolution, health systems navigation, policy formulation, and strategic planning to enhance readiness for high-level public and clinical roles.
Facilitate nationally and internationally subsidised training workshops, conferences, and bootcamps that bridge the gap between medical curricula and real-world leadership demands.
2. Access to Global Clinical and Research Exchanges
Operate a transparent, merit-based platform for facilitating clinical and research exchanges, enabling medical students across Ireland to gain exposure to diverse healthcare systems and research paradigms irrespective of personal networks.
Establish bilateral and multilateral agreements with leading academic and healthcare institutions globally, ensuring alignment with IFMSA exchange standards.
Promote inclusivity and fairness in the allocation of exchange placements by decentralising access and offering financial subsidies and preparatory support.
3. Global and National Health Advocacy
Represent the collective voice of medical students in Ireland within international policy forums, including the IFMSA General Assemblies, WHO youth delegations, and European medical student alliances.
Engage in evidence-informed advocacy at the national and institutional levels to promote student welfare, inclusive medical education, health justice, and sustainable health systems.
Build strategic alliances with other youth health organisations, NGOs, and intergovernmental agencies to amplify the influence of Irish medical students in shaping global health policy.
4. Academic Excellence and Research Capacity Development
Provide mentorship frameworks, grant-writing support, and skills-based workshops to enhance medical students’ research literacy, scientific writing, and critical appraisal abilities. (should we add info about clinical skills and medical knowledge?).
Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration between medical students and academic institutions to foster innovation, translational research, and student-led publications.
Integrate research training into student-led initiatives, contributing to the evidence base of medical education, global health, and clinical practice.
5. Sustainability, Inclusion, and Institutional Resilience
Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across all operational areas, ensuring that the organization reflects the pluralism of the student body and wider society.
Our Strategy
Our National Strategy is currently under construction, involving several members of the AMSI Executive Board. Contained within this strategy is also our Financial Strategy, something which is crucial to the sustainability of AMSI long into the future.

Our Story
On the 9th of November 2013, Medical Students from across the country came together for the inaugural National Medical Student Summit. This summit led to the launch and establishment of the Association of Medical Students, Ireland (AMSI). For the first time since the late 19th century, Irish medical students have an organisation that can facilitate dialogue at a national and international level.
